The Arab League punishes Syrian Government!

13-November,2011-(Berberanews)- This year almost every Arab state, from the Atlantic to the Gulf, has had to at least go through the motions of initiating political reform.

After Syria failed to comply with an agreement to end the crackdown on a nationwide protest movement calling for Assad’s resignation, The Arab League foreign ministers on Saturday voted 18-22 to punish Syria in an emergency session at its headquarters. The suspension on Damascus’ membership in the alliance takes effect today Wednesday-Nov/13th/2011.

The move won widespread praise in the international community; US President Barack Obama and EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton commended this action against Assad’s regime and expressed full support. The opposition Syrian National Council said it was a “step in the right direction.”

The League will impose economic and political sanctions on Nov/16th/11 to Assad’s government and has appealed to its member states to withdraw their ambassadors from Damascus.

Lebanon and Yemen voted against the measure and Iraq abstained. Syria, however, was barred from voting.
