Somaliland received its independence from Britain in June 1960 and was immediately recognized by 35 countries including 5 permanent members.mohamed Ibrahim Egal became the first prime minister and headed the first cabinet of ministers which comprised of four elected ministers the list included Garad Ali Garad Jama,Ah…med Haji Duale,Haji Yussuf Iman and Haji Ibrahim Noor. 5 days later the leaders under immense preasure from elders handed over unconditionally somaliland independence to Italian Somalia all in the name of greater somalia.the aim was to bring together all somalis from somaliland, somalia, northern kenya Ethiopian region of Ogaden and the beautiful french djibouti. in 18 may 1991 somaliland declared independent from somalia after brutal regime of siyad bare massacred innocent somalilanders.bormbadment of somaliland major cities in1988 is the major incident every somalilader will die to remember.the costy war of somali national movement liberated the country at long last.
Now somaliland has its own passport, currency vibrant private sector and most of all a functioning central government and two houses of parliament elected by the people for the people.in the year 2010 presidential elections was held and opposition party won the elections and there was peaceful and smooth transfer of power which is very rare in Africa. somaliland has good relation with its neighbours in dramatic contrast to their NOISY neighbours from the south.
CAIRO CONFERENCE in 1964 African nations agreed not changing colonial borders. so somaliland is not changing its colonial border infact somaliland is crying out loud to keep that agreement.UN ARTICLES AND AFRICAN UNION CHARTERS all give somaliland go ahead to be a state of its own. somaliland only nullifies failed union with their brothers from somalia. they are not the first to do that Senegal and Gambia, Ethiopia and Eritrea just to mention few all united and nullifed it afterwards.
Egypt and Syria also did. many countries from former USSR, czeck, slovakia etc did unite at sometime and latter separated. unfortunately the dream of greater somali is long dead and burried.somaliland was major force behind this idea of bringing all somalis under one flag and as a result of suffering now but what does not kill you makes you stronger.it was a brilliant idea to unite all somalis but if it was not to be why should we be held hostage.where on earth do you see a country handling over its everything the capital, leadership and it sovereinty so easily they realized how desperate we were for us all to unite and they took advantage of us. And for our Arab brothers. one very simple question.what happens when a married man gets mad.According to islamic teachings the woman automatically gets divorced if she wants to.we had a marriage agreement with somalia and we are automatically divorced because somalia has gone mad. The real somalilanders stand up for your rights.we strongly call for hiring of local and internatiol lawyers of international standard and calibre to get us our rights. the government of Somaliland and somalilanders lookthe least we can get is international attention of which we need at this juncture.please make sure this reaches out to government of republic of somaliland and its people.
We dont have to use guns to fight for our right.i have no doubt in my mind that this will have successful outcome.alot people think that we are not serious about our quest for recognition lets show them yes we are.
by farhan and mohamed saeed. please join us on facebook….stand up for somaliland right…..
