Laptops Can Reduce Sperm Activity in Men. Study Finds!

Berbera,02,Dec,2011-(Berberanews)-Working on a laptop wirelessly may hamper a man’s chances of fatherhood, scientists find.

Researchers from Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Nascentis Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Cordoba, Argentina found that exposure to the laptop resulted in a significant decrease in sperm motility and a significant increase in DNA fragmentation.

Males who place a laptop on their laps with the WI-FI on might have a greater risk of reduced sperm motility and more sperm DNA breakup, which could, in theory, undermine their chances of becoming fathers.

In their study, researchers took sperm from 29 men aged 26 to 45 and placed them either under a Wi-Fi connected laptop or away from the computer. The laptop connected to Wi-FI emitted 7 – 15 times more electromagnetic radiation than background levels.

The wireless connection creates electromagnetic radiation that damages semen, the scientists, from the United States and Argentina, believe.
“Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality, they wrote.

Previous studies had already shown that placing a laptop on a man’s lap could potentially affect his fertility, especially if this occurs frequently and for long periods. Researchers in this new study discovered that there was less damage when there was no Wi-Fi signal than when there was.
