Berbera-(Berberanews)-The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, officially reopened the newly rebuilt and refurbished Berbera International Airport.
The airport which boasts one the longest runways in the region, approximately, 4km long, has undergone extensive rebuilding which was funded by the United Arab Emirates.
The redevelopment of the airport is part of the effort by Somaliland to turn Berbera into a viable trading hub in the Horn of Africa.
Along with the continued work at DP World Berbera, the Berbera Corridor road and the proposed Free Trade Zone, the region is gradually becoming Somaliland’s commercial capitol.
The expectation is that the redeveloped airport, which has the state of the art aviation, security, logistics and safety equipment, will attract airliners from the region and beyond. The airport is also expected to act as an emergency landing point for the airlines flying over the region everyday.
It comes as no surprise, that the first airliner to arrive and depart from BIAC was Ethiopian Airlines.
