USA-(Berberanews)-US President Joe Biden declared the “first tranche” of sanctions against Russia, including steps to deprive the country of financial resources, claiming that Moscow had begun an invasion of Ukraine.
“Sanctions on Russia’s sovereign debt are being implemented.” That means we’ve cut Russia’s government off from Western funding,” Biden explained, adding that the sanctions would also target financial institutions and Russian “elites.”
Russia’s deployment of troops into two Moscow-backed self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine was previously described by the US as the “start of an invasion.”
The move occurred after the UK imposed penalties on Russian banks and high-net-worth individuals, while Germany, another of Kyiv’s Western allies, put a halt to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project’s approval process.
