Somaliland has once again protested what it describes as Djibouti’s repeated sabotage of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Somaliland and Ethiopia.
In a press conference held in #Hargeisa on Tuesday, Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Ali Mohamed Hassan, accused Djibouti of hosting a separatist faction known as “the Awdal State Movement” against Somaliland.
The minister highlighted that since the signing of the MOU with Addis Abeba, Djibouti has prioritized speaking negatively about the agreement. He warned that instability on the border between Somaliland, Ethiopia, and Djibouti would not benefit any side.
“Last week, the Awdal State Movement leaders were seen in Djibouti’s Kempinski Hotel and even attended Djibouti’s National Independence Day celebrations, where they vowed to work against the Somaliland administration and continue their fight for separating the Awdal region from Somaliland,” Hassan said.
This development follows comments by Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, who expressed his disappointment, saying he was “not expecting that Djibouti would act like that,” referring to the decision to host the movement leaders in Djibouti.
Djibouti shares a border with Somaliland, and the Awdal clans of Somaliland also reside in Djibouti, adding a layer of complexity to the regional dynamics.
