Ethiopia: PM Abiy Ahmed travels to a #Gofa zone area hit by a landslide In order to offer consolation to the victims of the recent landslide that rocked the area earlier this week, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Kencho Kebele in the Geze Gofa District of the Gofa Zone today.
Former Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives Abadula Gemeda and former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn accompanied the Prime Minister, according to the South Ethiopia Regional State office of the President.
There have been several fatalities from the landslide that happened in the South Ethiopia Regional State on Monday.
257 people have died, according to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and local officials believe that number could reach 500.
According to the most recent OCHA report, there are still people missing from search and rescue efforts. OCHA says that there have been new reports of smaller-scale landslide accidents in different locations of southern Ethiopia and Oromia.
The chairman of the Geze Gofa District Communication Office, Yealem Merheneh, previously informed Addis Standard that 39 individuals are still unaccounted for and that rescue crews are running low on fuel.
